It ball a fascinating story, enjoyed it. Oct 22, Prachi Sharma rated it liked it Shelves: I want to give this book 4 stars for the story I didn’t like the ending thoughbut since it is a translation of the original work, I am forced to rate it 3.

Separately, I rate the translation 2, which has clearly gone wrong at a number of places, and only makes me wish I could read Bengali.

Cohkher story, on the other hand, is beautiful in the way it plays with human emotions.

Mahendra’s obnoxiously self centered ways will infuriatingly annoy you. His unchaste exhibition isn’t so antagonising as I want to give this book 4 stars for the story I didn’t like the ending thoughbut since it is a translation of the original work, I am forced to rate it 3. His unchaste exhibition isn’t so antagonising as are his strong prejudices against his best friend and unrestricted feelings of superiority to women.

Choker Bali: A Passion Play () – Plot Summary – IMDb

He has been portrayed vhokher such a haughty and disdainful that honestly he deserves the love of neither Asha nor Binodini. But when she takes authority of the house in the absence of Mahendra, when she loses her hesitant ways after being betrayed by her husband whom she trusted blindly and her best friend whom she adored, is astounding. It only proves that it’s in times of adversity that we truly discover what we are capable of.

Bihari- Sensible, honest, kind, loyal and everything good. You’d thoroughly enjoying reading about him.

Chokher Bali

The star of the story. The central character around whom everyone else’s story revolves. The balu who makes everyone else’s story chokuer around her. She, with her flaws and desires, is what real humans are made of.

She pines with unrequited love after getting widowed at an early age and sets to get bail coercively, yearned by the romantic rendezvous of Mahendra and Asha. She is shrewd and wise at the same time. Her emotions seem so genuine that even her trickery and deception are easily digested as natural to being a human. There is a lot this story offers. There is element of secret hatred, that Asha feels towards Bihari.

Unspoken disgust of Bihari towards Mahendra and Binodini. Insurmountable jealousy of Mahendra towards Bihari. The love of an overprotective mother, envy and resentment of Binodini to Asha. And deep, domestic vice. It’s a good plot, with many complexities and coinciding interests.

May 14, Srujan rated it liked it. I am spellbound by the portrayal of women’s emotions in the book, so if I had to judge the book based on the story I would have rated it a good 4 or balj 4. I don’t blame Sukhendu Ray for bzli. Any translation attempt will definitely leave a gap and choiher is no different. Feb 19, shruti rated it liked it. Commencing on the backdrop of Calcutta during the era of British India, boook come across an Indian household leading a simple life, as it would seem at the very beginning.

Mahendra, the spoilt endearing son of a widowed mother who is over-affectionate over him. He is bought up in an affluent household and loves to be the center of attention. She trust Commencing on the backdrop of Calcutta during the era of British India, we come across an Indian household leading a simple life, as it would seem at the very beginning. She trusts everyone and is, at first, portrayed as a rather easy-going and weak character, quite opposite to her husband, who is sort of hard-headed.

The two characters share a loving bond at the beginning of their married boo. He is understanding, compassionate and has a fair sense of justice. He has every of that good quality that is lacking in Mahendra. Out of the two, he is more likable, influential and intellectual.

The story takes a big turn when Binodini enters the life of the trio. She was once earlier set to marry Mahendra and chohker Bihari but was discarded by both. Out of all the characters, she holds the most complicated stand. She could be loved yet hated at the same time.

Rabindranath Tagore’s Norm-Defying Novel, Chokher Bali

Her character is one of substance and importance. Widowed within one year of being married, she is attracted to the loving married life chokhher Asha and Mahendra and evidently wants it for herself. She has a contrasting sense of character within herself. She is baki main female protagonist and rightfully so, she manages to ascertain her positions as such. This story is a mixture of love, hate, resentment, mistrust, adultery and a fine depiction of the Calcutta of British era.

The story advanced in the most beautiful manner but at some points, it set upon a monotonous note and seemed to lose the touch of interest.

Having read the translated version, the true essence of the story appeared lost at parts. Scenes seemed incomplete at times. The story is a masterpiece owning to the captured chokhsr of the old era. The dialogues are intense and poetic, even carrying with it a bit of subtle humor. There are many such issues which appear relatable to even this day. The similar factors faced by most Indian households, especially Bengali, is accurate.

The tussle between the mother and Kakima, the mother and her daughter-in-law in regards to her son, everything is on point. This novel without a doubt was indeed way ahead of its time.

The character most cherished was perhaps Binodini. She was such a strong female lead, chokhee convent educated, she was already ahead of her time. When the girls of her age knew not how to read or write, she could converse as well.

She was a relatable character and appeared more real. Being a person of perfect qualities and beauty, it was not wrong for her to think- Mahendra balk her and not the simpleton Asha. She was a person of strong moral character, although wavered at one point, her later decisions convey the statement. The resentment, envy, and chokhe she faced while being with Mahendra and Asha was something completely normal.

The side characters like the two elderly woman, Annapurna and Rajalakshmi were portrayed in the natural and real light as well. All in all, they were unique and firmly placed in the rightful scenarios. It is bound to capture your attention and seek your judgments.

Rabindranath Tagore’s Norm-Defying Novel, Chokher Bali | Owlcation

The concept was perfectly new and daring for those times. The plight of the widows, lets us know the distance we have traveled since then. There is a familiar feel to it. Something of usual and homely nature. The movie version of this book directed by Rituporna Ghosh is as beautiful as the book itself. For literary fans, this book is surely a must read.

Nov 08, Ihsan rated it really liked it. A fascinating character study and a wonderful cultural insight. The book has you gripped from early on and it continues to keep you hooked until the end. The development of the relationship between characters is wonderful.

The limited almost-omniscience of the narrator increases the tension, as you can observe how the characters influence each other.
